The 2011 hurricane season officially kicked off on June 1. The National Weather Service and JP Perry Insurance want to increase the public’s awareness of their vulnerabilities and what actions they can take to reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.

• Hurricane season officially starts June 1. Visit our Facebook page to make sure you and your family are prepared in case disaster strikes. To learn about the tools you need to prepare, visit the National Hurricane Center’s Web site.
• A Category 4 hurricane can cause 100 times the damage of a Category 1 storm. However, even tropical storms are powerful enough to cause serious damage to your home or business. As a reminder, flood damage caused by these storms is often not covered by homeowners or business insurance. To learn more about flood insurance and your limitations of coverage, contact us for a review of your exposures.
• Before hurricane season, ensure the landscaping and trees on your property do not become wind hazards by:
- Trimming dead and weak/overhanging branches from all trees.
- Removing trees and bushes that are vulnerable to high winds, as well as any dead trees.
- Replacing gravel/rock landscaping materials with softer materials, such as mulch.
• When a hurricane hits, garage doors are frequently the first thing to fail in your home. You can help prevent this by reinforcing your garage door so it is able to withstand high winds. Read more at www.nhc.noaa.gov.
Hurricanes not only produce deadly winds – they also can leave behind dangerous inland flooding. Before your area is cut off by flood water, move to a safe area. Also, do not attempt to cross flowing water in a car or truck because as little as six inches of water may cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
